Tell Me Why This Doesn't Matter

May 15, 2023

This is what almost everyone I speak to tells me is going to happen.

They expect a failure up here in the S&P500, an inability to make new highs and instead, just an overwhelming rollover in stocks.

Here's what that looks like:

Consensus is the outcome shown above.

Almost no one thinks it's like this:

Which one do you think it is?

Personally, I'm trying to figure it out myself.

When you look elsewhere, you continue to see strength in places that you would not expect to see it if, in fact, stocks all over were about to collapse.

Tell me why this doesn't matter:

Highest weekly close for the Nasdaq100 since August.

Please tell me why we should ignore this.

"Because it's only 5 stocks driving the market, JC".

No. It's not just 5 stocks.

Is the Equally-weighted Nasdaq100 up 17% since the June lows for the market because "it's only 5 stocks"?

And we're seeing strength continue in different parts of the world.

Germany hit new all-time highs. France has been hitting new all-time highs. Denmark and United Kingdom are both hitting new all-time highs.

But if you keep going east, you'll also find strength.

Look at Japan making new 52-week highs:

How bad at math do you need to be to think that it's only 5 stocks driving this market?

I really don't understand that particular conspiracy theory.

It doesn't make any mathematical sense.

Also the data is free, so where are people coming up with this nonsense?

I think regardless of how long it takes S&Ps to break out, there are opportunities out there already. There have been. And there will continue to be.

Of course, with the U.S. underperforming this bull market, we want to keep placing bets in foreign equities that trade here in the states.
